There aren’t many horizontal gun safes on the market and the main reason for that is because they are made with a special purpose. Vertical gun safes you can put in your office, in your bedroom, in the closet, in the center of your room, it actually doesn’t matter. But, the horizontal gun safe is not that simple because it is made for a special location. If you need a gun safe that is wider than higher, it usually means you have to hide it somewhere.
The most common place for a horizontal gun safe is under the bed and that is why they are also called the “under bed gun safes”. Besides under the bed, they can be installed in the trunk of your vehicle or under the closet. The main reason to use a gun safe like that is lack of space. When you put the safe under a furniture you are saving space and you are making sure that the gun safe stays hidden.
The horizontal gun safe is made to store long guns and a few handguns, but it is mainly a gun safe for rifles and shotguns. There are many models on the market which means that you can choose your safe by the type of lock, the type of construction or by the brand, which is great. So, to help you choose the safe I have made my personal Top 5 best horizontal gun safes you can read here.
Top 5 Horizontal Gun Safes
Hornady Rapid Safe 98190
Hornady is a brand that is famous for their RFID technology you can find in this horizontal gun safe. It is a technology that allows you to open the gun safe without touching with special RFID programmed keys. Those keys are actually key fobs, wristband, and stickers which means you can share it with people you trust. The second lock you can use is a digital combination lock that requires 4-6 digit PIN number you can share with people you trust if you want. You can store two or more long guns inside but that depends on the type of the long gun.
The gun safe is made of 16-gauge steel construction and it has internal hardened locking lungs which means that it is practically impossible to break into. The RFID and digital combination locks require power and this safe has the AC power which means you won’t run out of electricity. The safe meets ASTM standards for child safety and it has endured several tests so it is proven quality.
American Security Defense Vault
American Security is a brand known as the AMSEC and this horizontal gun safe is their product you can place under the bed. The 14-gauge steel construction makes sure that the gun safe stays closed and its foam padded interior makes sure that your long guns stay scratch free. Since it is a horizontal safe, it has a slide tray that that pulls out so you can easily grab the long gun on it.
The ESL5 electronic lock makes sure that only people with the right code can open the safe. What I like is that the keypad is illuminated, but only during the time you are entering the code. When the safe opens the light shuts down so it conserves energy. The under the bed safes usually come with pre-drilled holes and this safe is not an exception, it comes with 4 pre-drilled holes.
SnapSafe Under Bed Gun Safe 75400
The horizontal gun safe is actually made in form of a steel cabinet and a pull out drawer inside of the cabinet. The drawer has carpeted bottom to prevent your belongings from scratching and the drawer design gives you a bigger storage space. You can use it to store handguns, long guns and other valuables like documents and jewelry. It is an under the bed gun safe but you can put it in the trunk of your car too (if it fits).
The SnapSafe under the bed gun safe is also made of 14-gauge steel construction and it has the pry-resistant door that will prevent any pry attacks on the safe. The gun safe comes with a digital combination lock and you can programme it for 3-8 digits PIN number which is great because no one will know how many digits you used. If for some reason the combination lock fails (battery runs out) you can unlock the safe with the backup lock and key.
MonsterVault Underbed Safe
The MonsterVault gun safe is also a safe that you can store under the bed and it has the similar design like the SnapSafe – the drawer design. It is a pretty big gun safe so you can store your handguns and long guns inside, but the exact number depends on the type of firearm you have. The interior is carpeted and I think it is a must-have feature for every gun safe.
The horizontal gun safe is made from two types of steel. The top and the bottom are made from 11-gauge steel and the sides are made of 7-gauge steel construction. The digital combination key will only open if you enter the right PIN number so you can be sure that your guns are safe. If you still aren’t convinced you will be happy to hear that the gun safe comes with a 7-year warranty.
Stealth Defense Vault Under Bed Gun Safe DV652
The Stealth Defense horizontal gun safe is similar to the AMSEC gun safe I have reviewed above and their design is so similar that I can’t tell which one is original. The pull-out tray comes with protection against scratching and the construction is made of 14-gauge steel. There is a room for a long gun and a handgun inside the safe. You can put more firearms inside but I wouldn’t recommend it because it will get cramped.
The digital combination key also illuminates when you are using it and the lights turn down when the safe is unlocked to conserve energy, just like the AMSEC model. You don’t have to worry about burglars taking the entire safe because you can easily mount it down with pre-drilled holes and mounting hardware.
